REVOLUTIONS

Revolutions is a generative music sculpture that utilises indeterminate mechanical motion to produce music. This project was created to explore the process of designing and fabricating a physically indeterminate system, and investigate the role that understanding plays in our experience of music and art.

This work follows on from my undergraduate studies of "anti-social performance" and the relationship between audience and performer by creating a system or systems that are not reliant on human interaction to produce music.

The whole structure is based around rotation, with each layer having a motor controlled gear that actuates wooden mallets at each point in its rotation. These motors are in turn controlled via LED controlled PWM boards. The brightness of the LED relates to the speed of the motor, lending visual aid to the indeterminate system being used to produce and augment the music of the sculpture.
