ØRKEN SALT
Ørken Salt was born from an assessment task and became a main performance and recording outlet of myself and two friends. My initial role in the group was as a live mixer and general effect control hub, but gradually morphed into an instrumentalist as well.
My instrument of choice is a four-track cassette recorder and player, and I use custom made tape loops of roughly 7-10 seconds, as well as some handmade MIDI controllers. The four-track allows me to have four pre-recorded or live recording tracks that I can then control the volume of and bring in and out of the performance.
The main reason for this is the cassette offers a warm wobbling sound as well as a rich textural ambience. The loops join at a cut also and this becomes a droning rhythmic aspect of the tapes. You can get higher degrees of instability if you use cheaper cassette tape or better quality recordings using chrome or metal-type cassettes.
This whole cassette practice for me is both about using more textural and organic composition and performance methods, as well as the practical experimentation of limitations in creativity.
